STEM Kids - could anyone become one?
“ STEM“ KIDS - COULD ANYBODY BECOME ONE?
“ The Future of a Nation Depends on Education”
-Aristotle
We live in the XXI century which is considered the computer sciences, digital technology and communications century. It is fueled by “STEM” sciences. Success in this modern applied science century depends on mastering the “STEM” sciences language which is Mathematics. Just like learning the spoken language, the language of math too can be learned by exposing children at a very early age to both languages.
“STEM” is an acronym that stands for (Science - Technology - Engineering - Math). I strongly believe that since we learn spoken languages, no matter how difficult they may be, by constant exposure and hearing at a very early age, the math language too can be learned by the same methods. If children are repeatedly exposed to different levels of math concepts, with math focused toys, math figures, illustrated math books, computer games, Legos, problem solving, talks with reasoning and logic they could easily learn the math language, become familiar with basic math concepts and love math as much as their spoken language.
I personally do not believe that “boy are better than girls” or ”I have no talent for math”. A high level of math talent is needed only to become a superb mathematician or research scientist. What we are talking here is not special math talent but basic math concepts, reasoning and logical thinking and expressions. After all, language and math are both the creations of the human mind. They are related to each other, and work hand-in-hand.
Language and math education, combined with proper nutrition, in very early age stimulates the development of the brain which occurs mostly at a very early age. Therefore, I believe that our education system has to be directed at very early age, not just pre-K and school age children and for this reason, must include parents as well.
I am not an educator. I don’t know how all these things could be done without government involvement in every level and every phase of education involvement. Because the future of a nation depends on proper, timely and quality education of its children.
