NARCISSISM, POLITICS, DISLIKE OF FREEDOM, DECLINING POPULARITY OF LIBERAL DEMOCRACY PART 3
DISLIKE AND ESCAPE FROM FREEDOM
“Freedom comes with the burden of many personal responsibilities.”
My curiosity as to why some people dislike freedom so much that they try to escape from it, led me to the 21st edition of a very interesting old book, written in 1941, by Erich Fromm one of the greatest thinkers of his time, entitled “Escape from Freedom.”
I wholeheartedly recommend it to my readers who are interested in personal freedom.
As I see and understand it, the central idea of this book is that the modern man, after centuries of old struggles was able to free himself from the bondages of medieval pre-individual societies, and was able to build more democratic, free and prosperous societies.
Even though personal freedom was provided and protected by democratic societies, it came with heavy burdens of many personal responsibilities. It required a certain level of intelligence, education, acquisition of skills, thinking and personal decision making, maturity, and obeying society’s moral and ethical norms.
Those who could not carry the burden of all these responsibilities were left out, and felt lonely, confused, angry, and had no sense of belonging.
Most of the men have not yet acquired the maturity to be independent, rational, and responsible to control their inborn and irrational behaviors of destructiveness, hate, revenge, envy, and power and money.
They continue to yearn for a sense of belonging to any ideal, Idol, cult or group of same minded people, dictatorships, and ready to sacrifice their freedom to get rid of the heavy burden freedoms imposed on them.
I must admit that January 6th Capitol riots events represent the psychology of these types of immature masses.
